About Karen:
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #153419) in the State of California. I have extensive lived experience and broad professional experience in the intersection of trauma, neurodivergence and disability. I began my professional career working in an Independent Living Center for people with disabilities, as part of the Independent Living movement. The Independent Living movement was the disability civil rights movement in the United States and led to the establishment of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other related laws giving Disabled people the right to live independently in the community with services and supports. At the same time, I became connected to the neurodiversity movement, a civil rights movement specifically centered around the human dignity of Autistic people. I am a proud Autistic elder, a bisexual woman, and a survivor of complex trauma. I also have lived experience of physical disability, and I am a part-time user of mobility aids. I have worked in a variety of mental health and social service environments including community mental health, intensive outpatient treatment programs, a partial hospitalization program, and in telehealth and private practice settings. I was honored to be part of a team of other Autistic therapists who created a group curriculum designed to address the needs of Autistic youth and young adults in an intensive outpatient treatment environment. I currently work with a predominantly Latino caseload via telehealth with treatment concerns that include depression, anxiety, complex trauma, immigration stress, and racial trauma.
I offer a consultation perspective that is neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed, disability justice oriented, and centered in liberatory therapeutic practice.
